Carl Mattei and UNSW

Posted by Mikey Lynch

I spoke with Carl a few weeks ago about his experiences leading the student ministry at UNSW. Here are a couple of standout reflections:

  • Although general attendance is not as strong as it has been, small group attendance (51 groups) and MYC conference attendance (500 people) hasn't dropped. Students strongly value the community and belonging that is found in the small group.
  • It is very important to find ways to get into the residential college. Although, strangely, if the residential college is doing really good Christian ministry, like New College is, then it can compete with campus ministry for the students' time and attention.
  • Student interest in training has waned.
  • In evangelistic missions, there is a desire for a variety of formats with a variety of group sizes and media, not simply the large rally meeting.
