Greg shared with me some of his thoughts about AFES yesterday, over a ham and cheese roll and a cup of coffee-bag coffee down at Clifton Beach.
Student ministry has to go in one of two directions:
- Ninja: lean, focused, evangelistic, working with those who are willing to specialise. Some problems with this approach are that it still needs to look a little bit churchie, or else it can be so alien to even the keen Christians, that they can't cope and the church is always the Christians' first love, so you never get the students' full commitment.
- Church: run a full church setup. The problem with this approach is: why not just get a local church to run it? Why do you need a parachurch at all?
Advertising should be very high profile to raise awareness on campus and to demonstrate to the Christians that we are truly wanting to reach the university for Christ, not just a couple of people.
