Learn to do public speaking – it's invaluable in meetings and day to day interactions to be able to confidently put forward your views. Learn to write in plain language. Keep things simple. Don't waste people's time.

Learn to say no to things you can't do – outsource. Paying an expert is often the best decision you can make.

Learn the 80/20 rule. Be prepared not to be perfect in order to do more stuff.

Keep up to date with new developments in your field. Read the right blogs and magazines, keep in touch with technology, find new ways of doing things and suggest them to others.

Learn a little bit about desktop publishing and graphic design. It was very helpful. Below are some striking sections:

Based on my own experiences and my encounters with numberous ministries, I believe a college ministry generally needs two or three years to form its identity, strategy, core audience, and campus reputation. So before that time, evaluating a ministry should be done particularly carefully; its numerical growth during that period may not be a good indicator of its future success. Much growth may not take place until after two or three years have passed - at least. It is particularly sad, then, that many college ministries don't make it to that point - often because of a misunderstanding about these very truths.
(p. 50)

Missions means aggressive progress
It is this area - progresing as a campus mission - in which even the largest college ministries seems to struggle. On the opposite side of the concern about impatience with new college ministries, there is a danger of established ministries becoming complacent. Just as newer ministries are often too harshly judged based on their small size, some better established ministries seem to assume too quickly that their relatively large size, longevity, or level of support automatically indicates health and quality. But many large or long-lasting ministries still may lack the very things I noted in the last chapter, such as strategy, collaboration, successful preparation of students for post-college life, and health.

Based on my conversations and observations, I fear that some developed college ministries no longer place a high priority on regularly improving and gaining 'momentum' from year to year. As in missions around the world, it is absolutely necessary that college ministries make aggressive progress to continue to fulfill their role in the campus tribe.
(p. 51)

The net result of longevity is also a pretty powerful statistic. While other ministries may at times steal the spotlight, a consistent, long-term college ministry can ultimately impact a much larger number of students. Plus, a long-lasting mission effort not only gets to impact collegians, but eventually its influence can eztend to faculty, administration, and other 'locals' as the ministry becomes an integral part of the campus and even the city.

But the patience discussed above is usually required for ministries to be 'built to last'. When college ministers and their supporters aren't afraid of slow growth, they have the freedom to focus on building for longevity.
(p. 54)

It is notable that Campus Crusade for Christ, probably the most thriving college ministry in America, has traditionally started its ministries on campuses with entire teams. This powerful tactic of high initial investment corresponds with international missions efforts; there is often a need for 'overinvestment' up front to see the best eventual ministry results.
(p. 56)

Lunch with Greg Lee

Greg shared with me some of his thoughts about AFES yesterday, over a ham and cheese roll and a cup of coffee-bag coffee down at Clifton Beach.

Student ministry has to go in one of two directions:

Ninja: lean, focused, evangelistic, working with those who are willing to specialise. Some problems with this approach are that it still needs to look a little bit churchie, or else it can be so alien to even the keen Christians, that they can't cope and the church is always the Christians' first love, so you never get the students' full commitment.

Church: run a full church setup. The problem with this approach is: why not just get a local church to run it? Why do you need a parachurch at all?

He suggested that it's best to try to make contact with potential Christian uni students well before O Week: by running secondary school study camps, by visitng summer conventions, Christian/church schools and youth groups.

Advertising should be very high profile to raise awareness on campus and to demonstrate to the Christians that we are truly wanting to reach the university for Christ, not just a couple of people.

Meeting with Darryn Altclass

Met with Darryn last week @ the Pigeon Hole Cafe in West Hobart. Darryn has recently co-authored a book with Alan Hirsch called The Forgotten Ways Handbook. I asked him for advice on how to lead small groups and focus them on mission. A few things stood out in our conversation:

Raise the bar on discipleship (what is expected of the ordinary Christian) and lower the bar on church (what is required for a normal church structure),

Rather than using 'core values' which can become mere ideals, focus on 'core practices' which show how people can put things into practice,

Discover the direction of the ministry in collaboration with the ministry team,

Be aware that there is only so much time and attention that Christians students can give, in addition to their commitment to their local church. Deal with these issues up front.

I was greatly encouraged by Darryn's generosity and humility. I want to encourage the leaders to take initiative, but I feel like I accidentally smother people. I have been asking around to get advice on this. There are various possibilities:

Give up on making small groups an important part of my ministry - build it around my strengths.

Work on my weaknesses and get better at it.

Find someone else who is really good at it to do the small group stuff for me.

And I think 3. is the way to go. More than that, I think 3. is the solution to my problems in the past. Defining the role and then getting out of the way is the best way to empower others to take initiative in minitry. I'm beginning to see that one of the best things that I can do in leadership is not go to leadership meetings!

Initial thoughts about Uni Fellowship structure

1. Monthly evening meetings
With no shared lunch hour and many people working part-time while they study, an evening meeting makes more sense than a lunch time meeting.

2. Centrality of small groups
A strong small group ministry will put the focus on students being active in meeting new people and sharing Christ with their friends. If small groups are central then students at other campuses around the city will be more involved in Uni Fellowship.

These small groups will not be merely study groups or nurture groups, but places for prayer, socialising, planning and talking about opportunities to share the gospel.

The difficulty here will be to identify, recruit and train small groups leaders really well. They're a different crew, the Melbourne crew.

Here are some of the wise advice Peter shared with me:

Students seem to be more passive and Christian students arrive at uni unclear about the gospel. This means that recruiting student leadership is difficult.

Big Bible talks each week are losing their appeal to students. They want easy access and relevance.

Issues relating to identity, feeling defiled, losing hope are significant issues on campus right now.

It is hard to mobilise students in evangelism. Christians feel uncomfortable on campus and so they form a ghetto. The important thing is to teach them how to be comfortable in the world and show them how the gospel is even better than the philosophies of the world.

Christians don't arrive on campus with a ministry mindset. You have to begin by persuading Christians to be excited about Christ.

Public advertising is best done through: good website, word of mouth, posters on campus and free giveaways.

Do a lot of pre-evagelism to persuade people that God and Christ are worth taking seriously.

When there is no common lunch hour on campus, evening meetings work better.

Fundraising update

$16 200 raised
$83 800 to go

Thanks again to those who have generously supported us and for others who have pledged to be in partnership with us in prayer.

MYC Sermons

Money
Parents
Sex
Mission

Andrew K's advice: empower students

Andrew Katay used to be a uni missionary @ Sydney uni. If the smallgroups are going to have a good mission focus, you need great leaders.

Method of assessing smallgroup leaders: have a larger meeting where people break out into small groups during the evening. Watch for the natural leaders in this controlled, fishbowl setting.

If you want your leaders to really know how to put your missionary goals into practice you need to model it to them. You need to go to parties with them and model conversational evangelism.

The smallgroups need not be defined by a regular, weekly Bible study, rather they are a group of students who are sharing the rhythms of life together and being committed to mission on campus together.

Throw great parties. Good food, good beer, thoughtful, kind, interested people.

Don't assume that students know how to throw a good BBQ, do it for cheap, start a good conversation with a newcomer.

Devote time in your meetings to talk about the evidences of God's grace, 'celebrating the wins' in everyday opportunities.

Carl Mattei and UNSW

I spoke with Carl a few weeks ago about his experiences leading the student ministry at UNSW. Here are a couple of standout reflections:

Although general attendance is not as strong as it has been, small group attendance (51 groups) and MYC conference attendance (500 people) hasn't dropped. Students strongly value the community and belonging that is found in the small group.

It is very important to find ways to get into the residential college. Although, strangely, if the residential college is doing really good Christian ministry, like New College is, then it can compete with campus ministry for the students' time and attention.

Student interest in training has waned.

In evangelistic missions, there is a desire for a variety of formats with a variety of group sizes and media, not simply the large rally meeting.

Especially by people under 40. People over 40 seem to get it.

Here's a few reasons:

The person who planted the seed in my mind was Col Marshall, from MTS. About April last year he was in Launceston doing some training for MTS Tasmania and he said, "You shouldn't go and plant a church, just cause that what you think everyone else should be doing. You should, like Wesley, go to the university, and so 'sweeten the whole stream'".

I think I had begun to take student ministry for granted. In fact, I had begun to have a lower vision for what student ministry is all about. It's not just about 'teaching students to read the Bible'. It's not even just 'strategic' in a vague sort of way. It is a prime hothouse of innovative evangelism and leadership development.

Hobart is a small city and has only one university. In that way, the Univeristy of Tasmania is much, much more central to the culture of this city than universities are in larger cities.

One of the big reasons there are so many young men keen for church planting right now, is because we have had 20 years of some of the best campus ministries in the world. It would be short sighted to reap the harvest now without sowing for the future.

Now that there are more and more churches that are really switched on, parachurch student ministry is no longer bound to 'doing the churches job for them'. Pioneer planters and evangelists used to gravitate to student ministry because it was hard, if not impossible, to have the same freedom in church ilfe. That is changing. That means student ministry has to be different, and more focused and better. I want to join with others in figuring that out.

Campus ministry rethink in France

Seems like a lot of people think student ministries need to be revised. type='text'>Small groups for campus ministry

Students at UTAS have been reluctant to get involved in small groups. They're already in small groups at church. They already get Bible study there. Why do they need more?

One answer I have been working up is: Not for anything you will get out of it. I'm not offering something to you as a consumer. I'm asking you to join something as part of the mission. Join a small group to be better deployed for mission.

This morning I came up with a second answer: Choose the small group that complements your church experience. Those from evangelical churches may get plenty of Bible study. But, to be honest, how much time do they actually spend on their knees? If they don't pray much, they should join a prayer team. Those from charismatic churches, to be honest, don't spend much time in in-depth Bible study. They should join a Bible study group.

Ministry on the Gold Coast

I spoke to Tony Rowbotham today, the campus director at Gold Coast's Griffith Christian Students at Griffith University. Gold Coast, like Hobart, is a small city (500 000 people), and the Gold Coast campus of Griffith is also small (12 000 students).

Tony's ministry is different to the normal model of AFES ministry, in ways that I find attractive and appealing, and has been blessed with a substantial number of conversions.:

Hardly any public advertising and mission events. Apart from a few bits of noticeboard advertising.

No one, large public meeting, but three small (10-25 people) meetings. He plans to keep it this way.

A dialogical form of teaching that mixes theologically stretching preaching with discussion and interaction.

Each meeting has a sharing time for students to share 'ministry moments' from the week gone.

He meets up one to one

Tony notes that only those students who really buy into the mission continue to be a part of the ministry. This allows the focus to remain on evangelism, rather than training or pastoral ministry.

He also told me that non-Christian students appreciate the seminar format of the meetings. It allows them to 'be heard' and they will often come over an extended period of time. Even if the ministry grows, he says that he would prefer to keep the public meetings small, to maintain this dynamic.

Mars Hill College Mission

When I was over in Seattle, I met Matt Jensen, who has pioneered the Mars Hill College Mission to University of Washington.
